A JOURNEY IN ACQUIRING NFTs AS A MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM

In February 2023, the National Museum of Modern Art at Centre Pompidou announced the acquisition of an ensemble of blockchain-related works, including its first NFTs. This presentation will develop on the process that led to this selection, focusing on artists from the fields of visual arts, net art and crypto art, and on the many questions that came along the way through the acquisition. What specific challenges does a public institution has to face when acquiring NFTs? To what extend does this process differs methodologically from the acquisition of previous new-media works?

Philippe Bettinelli is curator working at the New Media Department at Centre Pompidou, Paris. He curated the net art exhibition Sans objet, the Marcel Duchamp Prize 2021 edition. Together with Marcella Lista, chief curator of the New Media Department, he is working on the museum’s NFT acquisitions.
