Saskia Draxler
THIS CONTRACT IS ART / THIS CONTRACT IS NOT ART. NEW DIGITAL ART & DEFINITIONS
The terminologies in which we talk about New Digital Art are not clarified and are fuzzy. Because of this conceptual ambiguity and inflationary superlatives, it is difficult to locate it in the history of art, which, it seems, wants to be forced by some actors. It is often talked of "pioneers", for example, or of history being written. Mostly, these buzzwords are then used by a new scene, which tries to make its own history and to assert itself against art history. Very often, an opposition to the so-called "traditional art" is sought, while at the same time the recognition of the "traditional art world" is sought, by simulating it and claiming an "equal history" and by inserting itself by buying into its marketplaces, such as Art Basel. In her lecture, Saskia Draxler will try to make some suggestions about the conceptual approach, or even raise the question of the conceptual approach to the conceptual handling of New Digital Art.
Saskia Draxler is a gallerist at Nagel Draxler, Berlin, Cologne and Munich. She studied German language and literature, philosophy, and theater, film, and media studies in Frankfurt am Main.
