COLLECTING NFTs – FROM CERTIFICATE TO WALLET PORTRAIT

The talk will give an overview of challenges and opportunities provided by NFTs in a museum context, from commissions to acquisitions. Among the topics discussed will be the functions of NFTs as certificates of authenticity vs. art medium, and the ways in which these functionalities affect acquisition paperwork, storage, conservation, and presentation. Case studies will be used to explore how curatorial practice in the NFT space is shaped by the specifics of platforms and the economic and social space of the blockchain.

Christiane Paul is Curator of Digital Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art and Professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School.
