Department of Photography

Thanks to the then director of the Museum Folkwang, Paul Vogt, that after the death of the photographer and photography teacher Otto Steinert in 1978, the Folkwang School of Design's study collection of around 3,500 photographs was handed over to the Museum Folkwang as the basis for the establishment of an independent department. However, interest in and commitment to photography as a visual medium have been associated with the name Folkwang for a long time. Just one year after the Museum Folkwang was founded in 1902 in Hagen by Karl Ernst Osthaus, a first exhibition on international professional photography was held.
Although the Folkwang School of Design was integrated into the Essen Comprehensive University in 1972, i.e. the sponsorship was transferred from the city of Essen to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Department of Photography, which had been built up with city funds, was for the time being exclusively available for teaching in the school rooms. With the establishment of the department 'Photographic Collection in the Museum Folkwang' in autumn 1978, the part of the photographers' training initiated by Otto Steinert and unique in Germany at the time – the teaching of photographic history using original examples – was then brought to an end. From then on, the collection was open to the public and its holdings were made known through numerous publications. The collaboration between Paul Vogt and Ute Eskildsen developed into close contacts with regional foundations, whose funding has enabled the collection to be expanded decisively to the present day.

With the help of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation and thanks to the personal commitment of Berthold Beitz, both the private picture collection and the library and later the photographic estate of Steinert were secured for the Museum Folkwang and an extensive collection on the work of August Sander, on portrait photography of the 1920s and on the photogram work of László Moholy-Nagy was acquired. From 1978 to 1983, the Department of Photography remained in the rooms of the Folkwang School in Essen-Werden. During these years, the holdings were catalogued. In the autumn/winter of 1983, the collection presented itself in the Museum Folkwang with the exhibition "The Photographic Collection" and since then has shown a diverse exhibition programme that conveys the broad spectrum of photographic activities, both historical and contemporary. In addition, various scholarship programmes have been developed in the Department of Photography since 1982, which serve both to promote photographic production and publication and to train the next generation of curators.

STIPENDIENPROGRAMM ZEITGENÖSSICHE DEUTSCHE FOTOGRAFIE DER ALFRIED KRUPP VON BOHLEN UND HALBACH-STIFTUNG

Die Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung vergibt seit 1982 in Zusammenarbeit mit der Fotografischen Sammlung des Museum Folkwang Stipendien für Zeitgenössische deutsche Fotografie. Die Förderung wendet sich an Fotografinnen und Fotografen (ohne Altersbegrenzung), die unabhängig von einer Auftragsarbeit ein fotografisches Vorhaben über einen längeren Zeitraum erarbeiten möchten. Die Ausschreibung ist weder thematisch gebunden, noch einem bestimmten Bereich der fotografischen Praxis zugeordnet. Die Krupp-Stiftung möchte mit diesem offen gehaltenen Förderprogramm eine zeitgemäße bildnerische Auseinandersetzung mit fotografischen Sicht- und Darstellungsweisen fördern. Die Fotografische Sammlung des Museum Folkwang betreut dieses Förderprogramm. Alle zwei Jahre werden jeweils zwei Stipendien ausgeschrieben. Das Stipendium ist mit 13.000 Euro dotiert und wird für die Dauer eines Jahres vergeben. Innerhalb dieses Zeitraums muss das geplante fotografische Vorhaben abgeschlossen sein. Eine Dokumentation bzw. Beispiele aus dem Projekt verbleiben nach Abschluss in der Fotografischen Sammlung des Museum Folkwang.

STIPENDIEN MUSEUMSKURATOREN FÜR FOTOGRAFIE DER ALFRIED KRUPP VON BOHLEN UND HALBACH-STIFTUNG

Im Jahr 2000 startete das Förderungsprogramm der Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung Museumskuratoren für Fotografie, das angehenden Fotokuratorinnen und -kuratoren eine museumsspezifische Ausbildung an drei fotografischen Sammlungen im deutschsprachigen Raum ermöglicht. Neben der Fotografischen Sammlung im Museum Folkwang sind die Sammlung Fotografie am Münchner Stadtmuseum und das Fotomuseum Winterthur an dem Programm beteiligt. Drei Stipendiatinnen/Stipendiaten sind für jeweils ein halbes Jahr an diesen drei Museen tätig. Seit 2010 beteiligen sich zudem das Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, das Victoria & Albert Museum, London, und seit 2018 das Centre Pompidou, Paris. Das Stipendium wird mit einem halbjährigen Aufenthalt bei einem der drei kooperierenden internationalen Museen abgeschlossen. Das Stipendium ist mit insgesamt 55.000 Euro dotiert und wird alle zwei Jahre vergeben.

ALBERT RENGER-PATZSCH-PREIS

Seit 1991 vergibt die Stiftung Dietrich Oppenberg den Albert Renger-Patzsch-Preis, einen mit 25.000 Euro dotierten europäischen Fotobuchpreis, alle drei Jahre für eine Buchproduktion. In Erinnerung an Renger-Patzschs großartige Leistungen zur Geschichte der dokumentarisch orientierten Fotografie und seines Beitrags zur Entwicklung des Fotobildbandes benannte die Dietrich Oppenberg Stiftung Essen diese Publikationsförderung europäischer Fotografie nach diesem bedeutenden Fotografen. Der Preis soll Fotografinnen und Fotografen die Möglichkeit geben, solche Fotoprojekte zu realisieren (nicht älter als drei Jahre), die als Buch konzipiert sind. Die Kandidatenfindung erfolgt über Vorschläge beratender Fachleute. Aus diesen Nominierungen wählt eine international besetzte Jury das zu fördernde Projekt aus eingereichten Buchentwürfen aus. Bisherige Preisträger waren Silke Grossmann (1991), Rita Ostrowskaja (1994), Boris Mikhailov (1997), Trine Søndergaard (2000), Peter Piller (2003), Aglaia Konrad (2006), Paola de Pietri (2009) und Lisa Barnard (2012).

FÖRDERPREIS DOKUMENTARFOTOGRAFIE

Seit 1994 vergibt die Wüstenrot Stiftung im zweijährigen Turnus einen Förderpreis Dokumentarfotografie in Zusammenarbeit mit der Fotografischen Sammlung des Museum Folkwang. Das Förderprogramm richtet sich an Fotografeninnen und Fotografien, die sich mit Themen der realen Lebenswelt beschäftigen und mit zeitgenössischen Mitteln die Definition des Abbildungscharakters der Fotografie reflektieren. Diese Auseinandersetzung zu unterstützen und ihre Weiterentwicklung zu fördern, ist Anliegen der Förderpreise. Ihre Vergabe ist offen für aktuelle Methoden, Formen und Techniken, die eine dokumentarische Haltung gegenüber der Wirklichkeit einnehmen. Die Wüstenrot Stiftung vergibt die Förderstipendien im Wert von 10.000 Euro im zweijährigen Turnus an vier Absolventeninnen und Absolventen deutscher Hochschulen und Akademien. Gefördert wird die Ausarbeitung und Realisierung des bei der Bewerbung eingereichten Vorhabens. Die während der Förderung entstandenen Arbeiten werden anschließend in einer Wanderausstellung gezeigt. Begleitend erscheint dazu ein Katalog. Eine Auswahl der Arbeiten verbleibt nach Abschluss der Ausstellung in der Fotografischen Sammlung des Museum Folkwang und steht dort der Forschung und für zukünftige Ausstellungsprojekte zur Verfügung.

The institutions united in the Essen Centre for Photography – the Folkwang University of the Arts, the Krupp Historical Archive, the Ruhr Museum Foundation and the Museum Folkwang – have been working together for some time to create a strong basis for continued cooperation. For more than 150 years, Essen has been one of the most important locations for photography in Germany. This is due, on the one hand, to the diverse and rich collections. This wealth of photographic usage is expressed not only in the large number of photographic objects (far more than 6.5 million photographs are preserved in the three collections), but also in the historical and systematic breadth of this tradition. There are no gaps, ranging from the early years of photography to the immediate present. On the other hand, this is due to the long continuity in teaching and research on photography, which goes back to 1927 with the founding of the Folkwangschule. Important results of this cooperation in the past have been exhibitions, conferences and workshops aimed at both a wider public and a specialist audience. In addition, numerous courses on the history, theory and practice of the medium convey the entire breadth of subject-specific knowledge to the next generation.
