Ed Atkins

In his video and installation work, British artist Ed Atkins (b. 1982) brings together computer-generated animations and analogue footage. Abrupt cuts in the editing serve as a constant reminder to the beholder that these places of longing do not exist in real life, but are the creation of visual memories and the possibilities afforded by modern image production. They act as a metaphor for the search for identity, for creative restlessness and for anchoring the real within the digital visual world. Composed of guitar music, everyday noise and electronic tunes, the soundtrack is a key creative element that structures the film and lends it emotional appeal. In one of his early videos, Paris Green, the camera roams through exotic forests as if in search of a lost paradise. Rays of sun break through thick clouds, pierce through lush green canopies and dance to the beat of the music in front of the camera.
