Visiting Masterpieces – Edvard Munch

Yearning and Expectancy

In spring 2018 Edvard Munch’s (1863–1944) painting The Girls on the Bridge from the Munch Museum in Oslo will make a guest appearance at the Museum Folkwang. The painting comes to Essen in exchange for Paul Gauguin’s Contes barbares, which is being lent to the Munch Museum from the collection at the Folkwang. The work was painted in 1927 and shows three girls waiting on a bridge in the coastal resort of Åsgårdstrand on the Oslofjord. This prestigious “guest” will form the centrepiece of a presentation of paintings and graphic works by Edvard Munch from the Folkwang collection.
