»The most important issues in social life cannot be resolved without the help of art.«
It was this conviction that would promt our museum founder Karl Ernst Osthaus to devote his life to promoting art, involvement and dialogue between cultures.

It was on his own initative that the Folkwang Museum was initially founded in 1902 in Hagen. In 1922 , the newly-established Folkwang-Museumsverein acquired his extraordinary collection on behalf of the City of Essen. It laid the basis of today's Museum Folkwang, which, in 2022, will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in Essen.
