Museum Folkwang Collection Project

In connection with creating an office for provenance research, since 2016 Museum Folkwang has conducted systematic research into the origin of items in the collection. Painting, sculptures and prints are examined but also objects from Africa, the Arab world, Asia, and South America that form the basis of the collection.

From 2019 to 2020 a project supported by the German Lost Art Foundation in Magdeburg on the provenance research of the paintings and sculptures that found their way into the museum during the Nazi period (1933−1945) and the post-war years (1946−1970) yielded further findings and results. A follow-up project with more detailed research will be proposed for 2022. Further projects on research into the acquisitions after 1946 as well as for artworks from the colonial period will follow.
